2025-09-20: 20,000+ Citations for the JSS Paper

In 2010, I published a paper about the metafor package in the Journal of Statistical Software (Viechtbauer, 2010). I have been fortunate enough that users of the package have been quite diligent in citing the package in their papers. Today another milestone was reached, with the paper being cited $R^2$

2014-12-15: Heterogeneity Estimators Galore

I added an example to the analysis examples section showing how to reproduce the results from one of the illustrative datasets used in the article by DerSimonian and Kacker (2007), and since I am sure there is a desperate need in the world for yet even more ways of estimating the amount of heterogeneity in a random-effects model meta-analysis, I threw in a whole bunch of extra estimators.$\tau^2$$\tau^2$

2015-11-30: Development Moved to git / GitHub

Up to now, I had been using a sort of home-brewed version control system for the development of the metafor package. In the meantime, I was watching all the cool kids jump on the git / GitHub bandwagon and was really starting to feel left out. But no longer! I have finally moved development to git / GitHub, so now I am cool again, right?!? I thought so

2016-09-25: New Version Out (1.9-9)

After fixing some issues introduced by some non-backwards compatible changes in a package that metafor makes use of in a few places, I pushed out version 1.9-9 to CRAN (see here). So this is now the official (i.e., CRAN) release. This version includes many smaller tweaks and improvements, plus a few more noteworthy ones:$I^2$

There is now a special interest group (SIG) mailing list for discussing the use of R for conducting meta-analyses at R-SIG-meta-analysis. Those types of questions are not well suited for the

2024-03-28: Version 4.6-0 Released on CRAN

A new version of the metafor package has been released on CRAN. This update occurred a bit sooner than originally planned, but there were two minor issues that flagged metafor as requiring an update as otherwise it would have been archived on CRAN, which would have led to some unpleasant consequences for other packages that depend on metafor. So an update needed to be pushed out relatively quickly.$$d = \frac{\bar{x}_1 - \bar{x…
